THE ANGRY DRAGONS 4 song 7” EP

THE ANGRY DRAGONS
4 song 7” EP
Transistor 66 2010

You read all about this combo back in MZ #4 and they’re back, this time on bright pink vinyl courtesy of Winnipeg’s finest label, Transistor 66 Records. 4 blasts of pure 60’s punk’n’girl group meets late 70’s punk noise to create a sound that every garage punk fan should love!  Vocalist J-Rod confidently holds down the helm as the guitars rip and snort over the crack rhythm section on the brutal, balls to the wall attack of the opener “Snake Apartment”, to the 60’s girl group gone bad sound of “Girlfriend” at the tail end of side 2. Four quick shots of killer garage punk on this hot chunk of vinyl that ends way too soon for these ears! And if you ever get a chance, these gals and guy put on a killer live show that’ll leave you shimmying, sweating and smiling the night away! (Dave O’Halloran)

This is the official debut (there was a self released CDR, see MZ#4 for details and an interview with this band) release by this Winnipeg combo that started out to play ‘60s garage rock’n’roll, just for the fun of it. Sure there’s plenty of those types of songs here, “Melvin” the snotty female take on “Gloria” and a ripping fuzz filled version of The Golliwogs’ “Fight Fire”. But with this release, it’s pretty obvious that there’s a lot more depth to this band as they venture into early ‘60s girl group sounds with “Girlfriend” and “Got To Be You” where lead singer Joanne’s (Joanne is also in the Winnipeg power trio American Flamewhip) voice demands our full attention. And what a voice it is, as it’s certainly a weapon that this band uses to maximum effect on the late ‘70s punk type tunes on this CD, those being “Snake Apartment” and “Hex”. Add to that, the timely recording of The Seeds “Can’t Seem To Make You Mine” (RIP Sky Saxon) and you’ve got a great debut from this band! And live, they’re an absolute killer combo, just made for drinking, dancing, and having fun with! (Dave O’Halloran)
