Bruised Tongue 2010
The super hot Felines have already broken up, but not before putting these four songs to tape on Pierre Richardson and Craig Proulx’s varied and interesting Ottawa-based cassette label Bruised Tongue. Looking like Tura Satana’s saucy younger sisters on the cover, The Felines (Steel Rose, Ilona Spo-Dee-O-Dee, Momo, and El Maraschino) introduce themselves on “Spy Kitty No. 9”, a purring trashy little number that would look good on John Waters before sliding into a surf instro with “Hell Kats”. Side B starts off with a bit of that familiar girl group sound on “Well Boy” (also on our MZ Vol. 5 CD comp) but more like the 5678s than the Ronettes. “Lincoln Continental (With Suicide Doors)” with Momo’s panicked distorted vocals would do Deja Voodoo proud! Too bad that song cuts off before the big sludgy finale verse, but Bruised Tongue does include a code for mp3s. I hope Miss Momo is able to start a band nearly as good here in Vancouver!
