11 tracks of pure pop goodness! That is this album put into one sentence that explains it all. The title track, “Tiny Slivers”, starts off this album with a bang! With lyrics like “The sun only shines in slivers in my apartment, the sun only shines in slivers when you’re not around.” Lyrics that carefully capture working/middle class struggles a la the Jam and quintessential films like Quadrophenia. The effortless “oh’s” and the melodic harmonies during the build-up in the interlude on the title track grab me where I need to be grabbed. “2nd Once in a Lifetime Girl” reminisces about missing chances and regrets in possibly the catchiest way possible. When frontman Daniel Perkins sings about getting on his knees and is begging you please, who can say no? “No Way Back” begins like a lovely little rhythmic soul/power-pop track. This track talks to those on the verge of bittersweet break-ups trying to bring you back up as reluctant as you may be. “Right Track” reminds me of the classic Billy Butler tune though it’s nothing really like it at all, but just as good! With keyboardist R. Scott working the keyboards like nobody’s business right from the get go. Possibly one of my favourite tunes off of this album only second to the title track! “Miss You Like You’re Dead” begins really simply and lovely with a nice basic chord structure but then turns into a slightly more accessible with a bit of a mainstream pop sound. “Sweetness” is very anthem-like in nature and is definitely a song I can see the crowd lip syncing the words at shows in the very near future. Though based in California, I have my fingers crossed on them coming back real soon! (Tammy Loveless)
