TY SEGALL/BLACK TIME split LP

TY SEGALL/BLACK TIME split LP

Telephone Explosion TER014 2009

www.telephoneexplosion.com

The dichotomy of Telephone Explosion pairing together the California surf punk of Ty Segall with the dark punk as fuck Black Time works brilliantly! Ty Segall starts things off with the instrumental “Schwag” leading into “Swag” which I feel like I’ve heard a million times already but love nonetheless and then mixes it all up with his best ape yells on the Dwarves’ “Be A Caveman”. Ty’s howling growl and persistent kick drum is accounted for on all tracks, especially the reverb heavy “Goin Down”. Unlike Londoners Black Time who don’t bother with any fancy effects on their five no frills Suicide meets Black Flag tunes that end with bassist Janie Too Bad screaming “You don’t love me like I love you / You don’t love me I Don’t THINK SO” on the final track. Don’t tell her that I secretly do, she may just spit in my face. (Janelle Hollyrock)

“Universal Momma”, with its lyrics written with Ty’s mom Cherri Segall, is a sweet lo-fi garage tune. The flipside has the more guitar-driven and energetic “86’d”. 500 pressing already sold out. (Janelle Hollyrock)

TY SEGALL AND MIKAL CRONIN Pop Song 7″ EP

TY SEGALL AND MIKAL CRONIN
Pop Song 7″ EP
Goodbye Boozy Records GB 47 2009, Pressing of 300

Nice, short trebley noise on A-side’s “Pop Song”. It’s fun and bound to annoy people who like production values with its overtly distorted vocals. Ty Segall returns to Italian label Goodbye Boozy collaborating with Mikal Cronin from Okie Dokie. The duo really works here on the B-side. “So, I went to the Beach” blends into a killer warped instrumental, my favourite cut of the three. Could imagine Elvis Gratton in a speedo bathing suit gyrating to that one! Ends with “Melody Kit Carson”. I thought this 7″ was really good. Check out all Ty Segall’s stuff including his Skin 7″ on GB, it’s incredible. (Bob Scott)

WOW! Incredible stuff from Ty Segall! I have to find out more about this guy! Ty plays also with Traditional Fools, Epsilons, and drums with Party Fowl who also have a new 7” out on Goodbye Boozy called “STD’s”. It’s a 2-song one-sided vinyl release, the B side is blank. Great scary clown/crying children cover pics! It’s nerve damaging noisey garage punk! But back to the Ty Segall 4-song 7”: It won’t come off my turntable and I am afraid the grooves are going to be worn to nothing! The last song, “and Then Judy Walked In”, is easily the best garage instrumental song you are likely to hear these days. The organ solos gave me goosebumps. It hits a perfect weird genius pitch, like the best stuff on the Hardcore Devo compilations. The other 3 tracks are amazing too, particularly “Booksmarts”. When you have had a shitty day, the punk choruses on this release are likely to give you that much needed second wind. When I get to hear something this good it’s as if the punks won. Each a 300 pressing. (Bob Scott)
