First heard Tyranna way back in 1980 on this Toronto punk comp called No Pedestrians and they easily had one of the standout songs with “Back Off Baby”. Well now you can get a much rougher and tougher version of the same song on this 7” EP of unreleased recordings from way back in ‘78/’79 when they were actively playing in the Toronto punk scene. Fronted by the strong vocals of Vera Skye, Tyranna are probably most remembered as one of the many bands drummer Cleave Anderson (Battered Wives, Blue Rodeo, presently The Screwed) has been in over the years. This EP has 4 songs in addition to the above mentioned “Back Off Baby”, with my fave being the power garage popper “Neighbour” which was later recorded by another Toronto combo, Naugahyde 5 in the early ‘90s. What’s the connection? Bassist Gerry Smith who is currently active in Will The Circle was in both bands. And finally Italy’s Rave Up Records has promised a full length of even more unreleased Tyranna tunes in the near future. (Dave O’Halloran)
