WHITE WIRES
WWII LP
Dirtnap 2010
A slick second full-length from Ottawa’s local superstars White Wires out on Dirtnap, a label that definitely knows their powerpop with recent releases by Mean Jeans and Tranzmitors. WWII is a deadly blast of 12 all-new tracks that’s a pleasant surprise since this is a band with enough scattered singles out there to easily fill a full-length without a sweat. Not since Feargal Sharkey have I heard a voice so distinctive and perfect for the major chord melodic powerpop than Ian Manhire’s. Listening to him on “I Just Wanna Be With You” makes me wish he’d bring his white denim jacket out West already. This threesome is bound to be the next big craze but I woulda liked more stand-out singles with recognizable hooks on WWII like personal faves the poppy “Stayed Up Late” (from their first LP Girly Girly Girly on Ian Manhire’s Going Gaga Records) and the dangerously addictive “Pogo Til I Puke Tonight” (7” single on Ugly Pop). This LP still unleashes a couple sidewinders like “I Can Tell” which should remind Canadians with a penchant for pop punk of Teenage Heads’ “Picture My Face”. I can think of far worse bands to follow than Frankie Venom’s! (Janelle Hollyrock)
